ArKids Services: Speech Therapy
The importance of children being able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas and understand the words, directions, thoughts, and ideas of others cannot be understated. At Arkids, students are encouraged to express themselves and interact with their teachers, therapists, and friends throughout the day. Our speech language pathologists are on hand to provide professional support to each student as they ask questions and discuss ideas. Arkids promotes both verbal and non-verbal communication throughout the day, whether in the classroom, on the playground, in the hallway, or during lunch.
Our speech language pathologists make it a priority that each of our children can effectively communicate by providing therapy either individually or in the classroom. Arkids SLP's teach students to use a wide array of verbal and non-verbal communication tactics, such as:
- Verbal language
- Sign language
- Augmentative communication
Arkids therapists also teach students that are not able to communicate verbally to use a multitude of adaptations and technologies that will improve both their autonomy and their level of self-confidence. Our students have demonstrated increased attention, focus, and motivation using technologies such as:
- SMART Boards
- Sound amplification systems
- iPads with voice apps
- Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices(AAC)
Many students at Arkids Pediatric Day Center communicate using a wide range of technological devices that fit specific situations. For example, a child can answer a question during an English lesson by touching pictured choices that are arranged on a static communication board. Later, the same student may utilize a dynamic-display communication device with voice output to request a recess activity.
Arkids also has AAC devices available for use and trial. Plus, in an effort to stay on the cutting edge of technology, we have AAC vendors regularly visit to share the latest technologies available and allow families and staff training and opportunities to try the new devices.
Our speech language pathologists also work with the children at Arkids to diagnosis and treat speech disorders, such as fluency disorders, articulation disorders, and voice disorders, and language disorders, such as Phonological Disorders, Morphological Disorders, Syntactical Disorders, Semantic Disorders, and Pragmatic Disorders. Whether the child has problems with phonemic awareness, reading, expressive language, or receptive language, the speech language pathologists at Arkids are some of the best in the region and can help your child realize their maximum potential.
All of the Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) at Arkids have advanced degrees, hold Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC), and are licensed in the state of Arkansas. They are also certified to work in schools. Many of our SLP's have also met the two-year supervision requirement of the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and can serve as clinical supervisors. Plus, many of our speech language pathologists specialize in feeding and swallowing disorders and oral motor disorders, and they have over 25 years of experience specializing in pediatrics!
